Frequently asked questions
Learning Luxembourgish, discovering Luxembourg and preparing for the Sproochentest.
Can I start learning Luxembourgish from zero?
Yes. Start with greetings, introducing yourself and everyday vocabulary. Melux offers a progressive learning path, listening and review. Use what you learn in short real-life conversations.
How long does it take to learn Luxembourgish?
There is no fixed deadline. It depends on your starting point, regular practice and opportunities to speak and listen. Set a realistic weekly goal; an app cannot guarantee a level or an exam result.
What is the Sproochentest?
It is the Luxembourgish language assessment organised by the INLL for the nationality procedures concerned. It includes two compulsory tests: speaking and listening comprehension. Check the INLL for current registration conditions and dates.
Which levels does the Sproochentest require?
The official speaking test requires A2 and listening comprehension requires B1. These are different skills: practising vocabulary alone does not demonstrate either level.
How can I prepare for speaking and listening?
For speaking, practise talking about family, work and leisure, and describing pictures. Record yourself and check whether your message is clear. For listening, listen to short dialogues, identify the main idea and details, then check the transcript. Melux offers original practice, not official exam questions.
Does Melux provide an official certificate or replace the civic exam?
No. Melux is independent and is not affiliated with the INLL or the Luxembourg government. Its results are practice records, not official certificates. The Sproochentest assesses language; Vivre ensemble au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg concerns civic knowledge and is a separate requirement. Consult the authorities for your situation.
How can I discover Luxembourg while learning?
Explore the Luxembourg section in Melux for history, institutions, monuments and places to visit. Connect this reading with everyday conversations. Consult the official information from each venue before a visit; learning activities do not replace administrative advice.
